Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise at the age of an infant. She worked as a night nurse to allow her aunt the space she required during the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art and theatre. DuVernay immediately was captivated when she showed her the 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay was taught by her that art can be a vehicle for activism. DuVernay was taught to be socially mindful by her mother. DuVernay was born in Compton by her parents but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father has lived for many generations. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by the summers she spent in Selma, and later directed the documentary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay developed an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to observe the house of a member of the jury, and then go through their garbage. As a result of her work she began to feel dissatisfied by journalism and moved into the business of publicity. DuVernay started her first job as a publicity specialist in an unassuming production studio straight after she graduated from school. Her own Public Relations company, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. Alongside PR, her agency launched a number of social media and lifestyle networks, including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
